Coming Soon: Horror ’73 Film Festival!

. . . and by coming soon, I mean already started.

My local favorite movie house, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, is doing a 20-film festival celebrating the 40th anniversary horror films from ’73.  They sorta got started early at the closing night of the annual Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival last weekend by screening Scream Blacula Scream, complete with live performances from local DC horror host Count Gore De Vol and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Sarcofiguy.

If you cannot join us, or cannot make as many of these films as you’d like, here’s the line-up.  Many of these are indeed available online already, or on Netflix, so I suppose you could have your own festival at home.  I don’t have much to say about most of these, as I haven’t seen the majority of this particular selection.  But if at all possible, you should get out and see these in the way they were intended: in a dark theater, surrounded by fellow fans, preferably ones who are scared.

 The Legend of Hell House

Don’t Look Now

The Creeping Flesh

The Satanic Rites of Dracula

Flesh For Frankenstein

The Vault of Horror

The Crazies

This is the one I will probably go see, mainly because it stars Lynn Lowry, and I’m something of an I Drink Your Bloodologist.

Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the Supernatural

Messiah of Evil

The Killing Kind

The Asphyx

Soylent Green

Ganja & Hess

Theatre of Blood

The Wicker Man

And Now the Screaming Starts

Berberian Sound Studio

The only one of the bunch not from back in the day, but a well-received homage to the era.
